“Competition was fierce, and there was a perception that I wouldn’t last,” she admits. “But we have been operating for five years now, proving that women can excel in trucking and logistics.”
When the pandemic brought the world to a standstill, Tara Cabling saw an opportunity. Instead of waiting for things to get better, she started Express Movers Logistics Services—a trucking business—with just one extra truck.

“During the lockdowns, trucks were the lifeline,” Cabling recalls. “Seeing the need, I knew I could make a difference.”

But as a woman in trucking, she faced an uphill battle. The industry was competitive, and many doubted whether she would last. “Competition was fierce, and there was a perception that I wouldn’t last,” she admits. “But we have been operating for five years now, proving that women can excel in trucking and logistics.” She has also noticed more women joining the industry, including some of her friends who have started their own logistics businesses.

With so many challenges in trucking, Cabling knew she had to work smart, and she suspected technology might be the biggest edge. “We started implementing GPS tracking for our trucks to monitor their locations, ensuring efficiency and security,” she explains. “And of course, reliable communication was crucial, so we equipped our drivers with mobile phones and SIM cards.”

After testing different mobile networks, she decided on Smart as her provider of choice. “We still rely heavily on the Smart app to monitor data, call, and text usage," she says. “With so many drivers and phones, I manage three separate accounts, including one for our family’s distribution business. It’s really convenient.” The Smart App helps business owners like Cabling manage their accounts—including data usage, balances, and billing, while also making it easier to register for promos.

Cabling also highlighted the major shift in the logistics industry over the years. “Digital has been transformative,” she notes. “Getting bookings through apps is so much easier. We used to rely on a very cumbersome communication relay process—but digital tools have streamlined operations.” She credits mobile connectivity for making it possible to balance her business with personal life. “It's how I manage everything,” she says. “Even when traveling with family and friends, I can monitor my business.”

As more women break barriers in male-dominated fields, Cabling hopes her journey inspires others to take the leap: “Be confident, believe in yourself and your vision. And during difficult times—keep trucking on.” With the right mindset, tools, and support, she believes women can excel in industries once thought to be off-limits.
