Mobile services provider Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) has distributed #PlantSmart kits to 40 Indigenous People (IP) farmers in Talakag, Bukidnon province, in cooperation with Peace Crops, a non-profit organization that educates IP communities about social farming and agro-enterprise.
Rey Anthony Anacleto, co-founder of Peace Crops, shared, “With the skyrocketing cost of fertilizers and other farm inputs, Peace Crops is thankful to have received 40 sets of plant kits from Smart and share them to the small-scale farmers in Sitio Migpait in Barangay Indulang.”
“These kits give them the opportunity to explore and grow more crops, bolster productivity, and hopefully, improve their livelihood,” he added.
27-year-old farmer Lovelyn Bud-ay is grateful to Smart for choosing their community as one of the program’s beneficiaries. “A lot of us here really wanted to grow our own vegetable garden but could not afford to purchase fertilizers and seedlings. With these plant kits from Smart, we don’t need to worry anymore,” she said.
The Plant Smart program supports the government’s “Plant, Plant, Plant” campaign to attain food security amidst the pandemic. Each plant kit contains vegetable seeds and loam soil to help local communities start their own edible gardens.
PLDT and Smart seek to uplift and improve the overall physical and mental wellness of Filipinos through programs that ensure food security, improve nutrition, and create awareness online. These projects also emphasize their commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG No. 2: Zero Hunger, and SDG No.3: Good Health and Well-Being.
