Employee volunteers, MPHHI frontliners spearhead regional vaccinations for MVP Group

by SMART Public Affairs | Sep 09, 2021
To help protect fellow employees rendering essential work during the pandemic, volunteers from various companies under the leadership of Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan worked hand-in-hand with clinical teams from Metro Pacific Hospital Holdings Inc. (MPHHI) to spearhead the first wave of provincial vaccinations under the group’s #WeGotYourVac Program.

The MVP Group initially launched in NCR in the first week of July the inoculation initiative for non-medical employees of its 60,000-strong workforce, following vaccinations for its Hospital Group in the first quarter of 2021.

The regional run kicked off with back-to-back vaccinations in Mindanao in partnership with MPHHI medical frontliners from St. Elizabeth Hospital Inc. (SEHI) in General Santos City and Davao Doctors Hospital (DDH).

“To successfully run a vaccination drive, it is important for clinical teams to have sufficient support. We’re pleased to be working with fellow employees from the MVP Group for this endeavor. We echo the stand of Chairman MVP: Any talk about ending this pandemic begins with a fundamental imperative: the successful rollout of ethically-procured, safe, and effective vaccines to a significant majority of our people,” MPHHI Group Chief Operating Officer and MVP Group Vaccine Task Force Co-Chairperson Dr. Jeffrey Staples said.

While stating the challenges of implementing a regional vaccination program amid pandemic restrictions, Smart Communications Inc.’s (Smart) Network Field Services Mindanao Head doubling as Vaccination Program Lead for the area Rodel D. Agustin shared how the very service that PLDT and Smart runs is helping them during this crisis. “Technology really helps as the coordination with internal and external partners – from HR teams and other involved departments, to medical teams from Metro Pacific Hospitals, to LGU partners, to mall partners - is mostly done online,” he said at the inoculation of MVP Group employees at DDH.

“We have virtual meetings every day and because our counterparts in Manila already have first-hand experience of conducting a vaccination activity, they effectively guide us, albeit virtually, for the regional runs,” Agustin explained.

The spirit of volunteerism shared by everyone who is part of the regional vaccination teams is aligned with the company’s core value of malasakit. “We are essential workers and frontliners. We are doing this vaccination program to make sure our employees are protected from COVID-19, especially when we do field work,” Mindanao Vaccination Program Co-Lead and PLDT Business Zone Head for Region 12 Melvin Lacuna said at the opening of the MVP Group’s General Santos vaccination site.

“PLDT is a customer-centric company with a people-first culture. The health and safety of our people is priority number one,” PLDT Inc. and Smart Communications President and CEO Alfredo S. Panlilio said. “I believe that the sooner we get these vaccinations done, the more lives we will be able to save, and the quicker we can revive our economy and recover as a nation,” he added.

The Mindanao vaccinations were followed by the activation of MVP Group’s inoculation center in Philex Padcal in Benguet, spearheaded by employees from Philex Mining Corporation and supported by PLDT and Smart, as well as partners from ActiveOne Health Inc. The mining property is home to almost 2,000 employees and 15,000 people in a community of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, from within the host and nearby towns, who rely largely on the mining operations as the engine of socio-economic activities.

“Philex Mining Corporation has not ceased to operate even during the pandemic,” according to Eulalio Austin, Jr., Philex President and CEO. “Our unsung heroes – the medical and health care frontliners of our medical department and Sto. Niño Hospital, as well as the respective managers, supervisors, and rank-and file of the various departments – continue to soldier on, never giving up the fight. It is our honor and our pleasure to serve as the regional hub for the MVP Group vaccination rollout. We fully support the government and private sector efforts in its mass vaccination program to achieve herd immunity at the soonest possible time.”

“We cannot and must not let our guard down,” Austin added, “as we brave the new day together.”

Other regional vaccinations were held in Robinsons Place Imus and Robinsons Galleria Cebu. The MVP Group Vaccine Task Force is looking at a nationwide network of over 30 locations comprised of Group-wide facilities, Metro Pacific Hospitals, and selected malls across the country.

The MVP Group Vaccination Program reinforces the conglomerate’s support for the government’s national vaccination rollout. Earlier this year, MPHHI helped ramp up LGU vaccinations by offering the expertise and available capacity of its largest NCR hospitals, where up to 98% of frontliners were vaccinated as early as Q1 2021.

The Group also showed solidarity with the national government and other members of the private sector with the ceremonial start of the vaccination rollout for the A4 sector in Q2 2021. This was in partnership with the National Task Force Against COVID-19, Taskforce T3 (Test, Trace and Treat), and the Department of Health (DOH).
