As 5G continues to be rolled out in the Philippines, here are some important facts subscribers need to know about the new technology
There’s no denying that 5G is the future of telecommunications. The ultrafast mobile data technology is currently being rolled out around the world, including the Philippines— but even as the country gears up for its adoption, there is still a lot of misinformation about the tech that’s going around.
Although some might claim otherwise, the truth is 5G isn’t bad for anyone. Here are a few common myths that have already been disproven:
1. 5G is dangerous to people’s health
Some are claiming that 5G technology brings with it radiation due to the use of high-frequency electromagnetic radio waves, which may cause cancer. However, the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) has debunked this by saying that current studies indicate that there is no established evidence for health effects from radio waves used in mobile telecommunications, including the upcoming 5G network. The agency has also declared 5G as safe.
Other studies have shown that the skin acts as a shield against the effects of radiation and electromagnetic waves, which means there’s absolutely nothing to worry about.
2. 5G is linked to COVID-19
Some of the wilder conspiracy theories going around is that 5G waves are causing COVID-19. Nothing could be further from the truth, as the highly contagious disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, not by 5G. Moreover, viruses cannot be transmitted over radio waves.
3. 5G will mess up satellites
There are some concerns, especially from meteorologists, that 5G might mess up satellites and the data they transmit, making weather predictions inaccurate. However, these fears are not yet confirmed, and the weather and telecommunications fields are still exploring the potential effects of 5G on weather reporting.
4. 5G can be used to spy on people
There are some claims that 5G networks would allow for easier spying on the public. Don’t worry—5G waves themselves cannot be used to spy on people, as we are not more vulnerable on 5G networks.
5. 5G will replace 4G
For those who are comfortable with their 4G smartphones, there’s no need to worry—even though there is a rollout already going on, 5G is not replacing 4G. While 4G replaced 3G years ago, 5G is its own separate technology that is being built on top of 4G networks, and even when 5G is present in your area, you can still use your 4G LTE smartphone. In fact, as more people subscribe to 5G, those still using 4G will likely see a boost in internet speed as the network “frees up.”
