Two of the major seaports in Southern Luzon are now equipped with carrier-grade Smart Wifi amid efforts to boost connectivity in the country’s nautical highway.
PLDT and Smart recently installed Wifi facilities in the Batangas International Port in Batangas City, and Calapan City Seaport in Mindoro, to provide users of both ports access to super-speed internet, and seamless digital experience in surfing the net for their favorite sites, or keeping connected to home or office while on the go.
The deployment is part of the first phase of the nationwide rollout of carrier-grade Smart Wifi in major transport hubs such as airports, seaports, and mass transport systems MRT and LRT in Metro Manila. Smart has earmarked an initial investment of close to P1 billion for this year’s rollout in a bid to address the demand for more Wifi hotspots as usage of smartphones and data services in the country continue to rise.
“The internet has become an integral part of our lives. Almost everything we do now is somehow connected to the internet. With a backhaul of up to 1 gigabit per second, Wifi users will have world-class customer experience while surfing the net for social media, entertainment, business or other relevant services,” said Kat Luna-Abelarde, FVP and Wireless Consumer Operations Head at Smart.
“We have expanded the reach of our carrier-grade Wifi services from airports that serve key destinations all over the country, to seaports that are linked to the country’s nautical highway. This nationwide deployment of Smart Wifi will enable more people to optimize the use of their smartphones and digital devices. It is also part of Smart’s three-year massive network modernization program to handle the expected rise in data traffic,” said Eric R. Alberto, EVP for PLDT/Smart, and president and CEO, ePLDT.
The service is now available in the Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao City; Laguindingan Airport in Misamis Oriental; Bacolod-Silay International Airport in Silay City; Iloilo International Airport in Iloilo City; Roxas Airport in Roxas City; Zamboanga Airport in Zamboanga City; Clark International Airport in the Clark Special Economic Zone in Mabalacat, Pampanga; Laoag International Airport; Dumaguete Airport, General Santos Airport, and Kalibo International Airport. Soon, Smart Wifi will also be upgraded in all four terminals of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay City, and other airports, including that of Puerto Princesa in Palawan, as well as Tagbilaran in Bohol.
More high traffic areas such as city halls, schools, hospitals, and malls, among others, will be covered by the service over time.
The deployment is backed by the PLDT Group’s robust and resilient wireless and fixed-line network infrastructure.
