From Sari-Sari Store Owner to Smart Millionaire

[4 May 2015] Small scale sari-sari store owner Jecebel Pioquinto Vela was in for the surprise of her life at the recently held Smart Ka-Partner Rewards convention in her district, which was one among a series of 30 events Smart organized for its load retailers nationwide. The highlight of the whole day event was the awarding of winners of the electronic raffle of the 2014 Ka-Partner Rewards Program.


Small scale sari-sari store owner Jecebel Pioquinto Vela has been joining the Ka-Partner Rewards Program of Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) for some time, and exclaims that she once won P1,000 in the e-raffle. “Nung nanalo ako,  tuwang-tuwa ako, tumatalon ako sa tuwa,” the 59-year-old single mother relates.

She shares that she needed the extra money.  Her husband left her, their house had burned down, and she was among those affected by typhoons Ondoy and Habagat.  Her income from her small store goes to supporting her mother, who lives with her.  Most of the time, she couldn’t even close shop to bring her elderly mother to her medical checkups, because that would mean loss of profits for the day, and she has several debts to pay.  

 Being a Smart load retailer has helped her meet their needs. “Ang ibang tinda ko, mabagal ang benta.  Ang Smart load in-demand kaya sigurado ang kita,” she says.  She has several “suki” who buy load from her, especially in the afternoon.   Vela is able to earn from her loading business even outside her sari-sari store.  Some customers would ask her to load their numbers from her cellphone when they meet in the street.  Others would text her late at night to ask for load and promise to pay in the morning.  She obliges, of course.  With the sales of her goods augmented solidly by her income from her load business, she has just enough for their needs.

Vela previously thought she won one of the minor prizes, like a laptop, and admits that she would have already been happy with that.  But as it turned out, she was a million times luckier than she initially thought.  Vela was one of three lucky Smart Load retailers to win P1M, the grand prize in the nationwide raffle.

“Talagang sinalihan ko iyan, nag-load ako, pati sa sarili ko, sa pamangkin ko at sa anak ko tapos yung credits ko, pinasok ko sa T40,” says an ecstatic Vela after receiving a whooping P1M “reward” from Smart.

She admits that the amount will go a long way in helping them.  First, she will use it for her mother’s checkups and medications.  Then, she plans to invest it in growing her business and fixing the house she shares with her mother.  The money will also help her settle her debts.

Started by Smart in 2012, the Ka-Partner Rewards Program qualifies all Smart Load retailers to enjoy various loyalty rewards and win as much as P1M in the raffle draws.

“The Smart Ka-Partner Rewards is our way of saying thank you to our front-liners, our last layer of distribution before our products reach our subscribers,” explains Perry Bayani, First Vice President and Group Head for Sales & Distribution at Smart.

For every P100 Smart Load sales per day, retailers earn an equivalent one (1) point, which can then be accumulated and used to avail of instant prizes and services such as free SMS and airtime or load wallet value.  They may also choose to exchange these points for electronic raffle entries to qualify in the quarterly and grand raffle draws.  Prizes in the quarterly draws include P100,000 and P10,000 cash prizes and Smart phone units.  The annual grand draw gives away not just one but three grand prizes of P1M each.

“Jecebel’s story is only one of the ways we can show and say that truly with the Smart Ka-Partner Program for our retailers, sama-sama sa pag-asenso – Aasenso ka sa 2015 Ka-partner Rewards Program, Aasenso ka sa Bagong Loads at Promos, and Aasenso ka sa Dagdag Negosyo,” says Bayani.
