[4 December 2014] Though highly effective, Easy Taxi’s local operation has met some operational challenges, particularly in disbursing cash to their thousands of drivers who receive cash prizes every week.
With Smart Money, drivers now have an easier time getting their cash disbursements and prizes from Easy Taxi without having to go to its head office. And because the money is in the card, they have peace of mind that their money is safe and secure as they go around the city. Arvin Raquim has been a cab driver for ten years already, but it is only until recently that he saw his income double with the help of technology.
“Some days I would see my income double, sometimes it’s just the same. But I definitely got more passengers in a day when I used the Easy Taxi app,” Raquim said.
Easy Taxi, a mobile application that helps passengers virtually hail cabs with the push of a button, has been helping drivers like Raquim augment their daily taxi-driving income by bringing the passengers to them, instead of having to constantly look around for customers waiting on the street.
Though highly effective, Easy Taxi’s local operation has met some operational challenges, particularly in disbursing cash to their thousands of drivers who receive cash prizes every week.
“We would usually line up at the Easy Taxi office to get our payment,” Raquim shared. “Oftentimes, the lines would be too long because of the sheer number of drivers. Not to mention the commute we’d have to spend going there.”
This is the reason why Easy Taxi tapped Smart Money, the leading mobile money service of Philippines wireless leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), to solve its cash disbursement woes.
Easy Taxi has now equipped its fleet of drivers with a Smart Money card, where the company could easily transfer cash meant for payouts, benefits, incentives, and contest prizes.
“Using Smart Money, our drivers would immediately receive their payouts and other benefits without the hassle, so they have more time to devote to their family or their work,” said Daniel Torres, CEO of Easy Taxi Philippines.
“We often hear of cab drivers being victimized by unscrupulous individuals that ride with them. By using Smart Money in getting their cash from Easy Taxi, drivers are given an extra layer of security and peace of mind whenever they drive around the city,” added Benjamin Fernandez, COO at Smart e-Money, Inc. (SMI).

With his Smart Money card, Raquim no longer needs to wait to get his money from Easy Taxi. “I don’t have to worry any more about making the long trip or waiting in line. Isang text lang, nandiyan na ang pera,” he added.
Aside from easier and more convenient money transfers, Easy Taxi drivers can also use their Smart Money cards for cashless purchases in malls and groceries; bills payment for various household utilities; and reloading their Smart and Talk ‘N Text phones, among many others.
In addition, Smart Money cards are more secure than their ATM card counterparts because users can easily “lock” and “unlock” the card for purchases and withdrawals, and they would immediately receive notifications in their mobile phones once successful transfers or withdrawals are made.
“This is just the first in the many synergies we are eyeing with Rocket Internet as we collaborate to bring mobile money to the next level, not just in the Philippines but in other emerging markets around the world,” Fernandez added.
In August, Smart’s parent company PLDT entered into a strategic partnership with Germany’s Rocket Internet by investing €333 million into the company. Aside from Easy Taxi, Rocket Internet companies operating in the country include Zalora, Lazada, FoodPanda, and Tripda.
