In celebration of World Read Aloud Day, Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) provided connectivity support and digital learning resources for a 13-stop storytelling caravan of social enterprise Basa Bookstore.
The storytelling fleet donated over 3,300 books for schools in Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos and Cagayan, with Smart providing flash drives containing LearnSmart e-Storytelling videos. Produced by Smart in partnership with The Storytelling Project and the Department of Education (DepEd), all 31 digital stories were aligned with the DepEd’s Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs), includes Filipino Sign Language translation, and concludes with an in-depth analysis by a child psychologist.
Aside from the LearnSmart e-Storytelling videos, the learning packets also contain Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials on child’s rights produced by the Council for the Welfare of Children. This is in line with the commitment of Smart and parent company PLDT Inc. to protect Filipino children.
Furthermore, 200 teachers from the caravan’s 27 Northern Luzon beneficiary schools will receive Smart prepaid load cards for their distance learning communication requirements.
Using connectivity provided by Smart, Basa Bookstore Founder and LearnSmart e-Storytelling host Rey Bufi also streamed storytelling sessions via Facebook Live throughout the week-long caravan.
“Our storytelling activities aim to provide psychosocial support and a sense of normalcy through reading. We hope that through the gift of reading, we will be able to help children by providing access to leisure and learning," Bufi said.
"Through this initiative, we hope that the students will be able to continue learning and that no one will be left behind in experiencing the power of reading and access to education,” Smart AVP for Community Partnerships Stephanie V. Orlino explained.
