[22 June 2016] PLDT wireless unit Smart Communications (Smart) once again provided satellite communications to emergency operations centers (EOCs) and government agencies during the 2nd quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC), and the annual shake drill of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

Smart set up connectivity at MMDA's EOC, and satellite broadband connectivity at the response cluster booth in Camp Aguinaldo. The wireless leader also provided satellite phones to the Philippine Disaster Recovery Foundation to enable them to test their operations center activation protocol.
Libreng Tawag service was made available by TV5's Alagang Kapatid Foundation at the disaster coordinating center in Veterans Medical Center. Some residents in the area tried calling using Smart satellite phones as part of the drill.
Studies have shown that a 7.2-magnitude tremor can cause enough damage to divide NCR into four quadrants. The earthquake drills are designed with this scenario in mind which is why EOC was assigned per quadrant. Veterans Medical Center is north quadrant’s EOC.
"Disaster preparedness and response have always been part of the culture of Smart. This is why we have been consistently supporting our partners from NDRRMC, MMDA, and OCD with vital communication infrastructure and services," said PLDT and Smart Public Affairs Group Head Ramon R. Isberto.
As a member of the Emergency Telecommunication Cluster of NDRRMC, Smart has been at the forefront of providing communication aid during disasters. These include free calling and charging services in affected areas which are made possible through a partnership sealed with the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
Smart, which is the only telco offering satellite services, also deploys satellite devices to LGUs and response units during emergency and relief operations.
Apart from providing communications support to the nationwide drill, Smart also enjoined its workforce to participate in the evacuation drill, as in the previous years.

"All these efforts underscore the important role of communications in emergency situations. We shall continue embrace this responsibility in our effort to promote a safe and disaster-ready Philippines," added Isberto.
As part of its #SafePH advocacy, Smart has been actively promoting a culture of preparedness not only within its ranks but also with its partner-communities, including the Church, academe, high-risk communities and Filipino households. Smart also helps OCD in institutionalizing disaster communications in the country through regional summits.
