PLDT, Smart enable Luzon schools transition to on-site classes

by Smart Communications | Sep 20, 2022
Moving in lockstep with the changing needs of students in the new normal, PLDT and its wireless unit Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) extend crisis-resilient education programs in schools, as on-site learning resumes after more than two years of hybrid and home-based classes.

PLDT and Smart recently onboarded 60 teachers from Conde Labac Integrated and Elementary Schools and Dumuclay Elementary School in Batangas City into the pandemic tested Central Visayas Institute Foundation Dynamic Learning Program (CVIF-DLP) to complement face-to-face classes and module-based education.

“While schools have opened their doors to welcome back students, they’re also utilizing distance learning methods to avoid crowding in classrooms. The CVIF-DLP fits perfectly in the new normal of education because it facilitates learning at home and ensures inclusive and equitable quality education for all students even outside of the classroom,” said Stephanie Orlino, Assistant Vice President and Head of Stakeholder Management at PLDT and Smart.

“As teachers we advocate for quality inclusive education where no learner is left behind. The CVIF-DLP helps close the gap on the lack of educators and learning materials. The program acts as a force multiplier so we can reach more students,” said Dr. Sacoro Comia, Chief, Curriculum Implementation Division, Department of Education-Batangas City.

Developed by Ramon Magsaysay awardees – Dr. Christopher Bernido and the late Dr. Maria Victoria Bernido – the CVIF-DLP is a teaching pedagogy that encourages independent learning among students. The program makes extensive use of the CVIF-DLP Learning Activity Sheets (LAS) that help improve learner outcomes even with little to no teacher or parent intervention.

PLDT and Smart also expanded hybrid learning at Sto. Tomas National High School (STNHS) in the country’s summer capital, Baguio City with the donation of five #LearnSmart kits to the school during the Department of Education’s Brigada Eskwela 2022.

Each #LearnSmart kit includes a Smart Bro LTE Pocket WiFi that comes with 100MB of data credits and a Smart Bro voucher, a 32GB USB flash drive preloaded with CVIF-DLP Learning Activity Sheets that are accessible offline, enabling learning even in hard-to-reach communities.

These initiatives form part of the PLDT Group’s commitment to help the country achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG No. 4: Quality Education, with a strong emphasis on digital literacy.
