Get a chance to win and donate tablets and laptops for students and teachers with no access to devices by joining activities inside the Smart University virtual campus!
Going to school during the pandemic may pose challenges, but a little ingenuity and innovation can make the experience exciting and more meaningful.
Welcome to Smart University, a virtual campus where students learn to navigate the new normal through activities arranged to teach, test, and motivate them to excel and reach out to other learners. The unique campus is open exclusively to subscribers of Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), which seeks to cushion the impact of the shift to distance and online learning necessitated by the global health crisis.
Attendees of the cyber event can listed to expert talks, join quiz shows and win prizes, and interact with one another. Speakers include Microsoft Modern Workplace Business Group Lead Yvette Watson, Google Southeast Asia Education Lead Victor Lam, and YouTube educreator and motivational speaker Lyqa Maravilla.
Highlights of the program will be streamed live in three episodes on Smart's Facebook page and smartuniversity2020.com.
Virtual points for a cause
As students participate in interactive games and activities inside the virtual campus, they can earn and accumulate points to be part of the Smart University Leaderboard. Upon collecting 30,000 points at the end of the third episode, which will feature a final stretch of quiz shows and the awarding of class topnotchers, the whole class will be able to donate three Smart School-in-a-Bag units.
School-in-a-Bag is a portable digital classroom designed to support distance learning, even in remote areas without electricity and internet connectivity. Each water-resistant backpack carries up to 20 tablets that are pre-loaded with educational content - including award-winning mother tongue-based interactive apps developed by Smart and academe partners - a teacher's laptop, a pocket WiFi kit, and more.
Teachers of the School-in-a-Bag beneficiary communities are also trained on the CVIF-Dynamic Learning Program, a pandemic-resilient strategy that supports home learning and works in various online and offline delivery modalities. CVIF-DLP will be deployed by the DepEd Philippines as a supplemental learning resource for school year 2020-2021 via the DepEd Commons web platform.
To-date, Smart and various donors have deployed over 200 School-in-a-Bag packages since under the #LearnSmart program. The initiative has helped bridge the digital divide for more than 60,000 underserved students nationwide.
“By winning their own School-in-a-Bag inside the Smart University virtual campus, participants can help students and teachers without access to devices overcome the challenges of learning despite the pandemic,” says Stephanie V. Orlino, AVP for Community Partnerships at Smart.
Initiatives to champion the youth
Spearheaded by Smart Prepaid, the Smart University Virtual Campus 2020 is yet another initiative to champion the youth -- from helping bridge the learning gap in the new normal to making knowledge and learning tools more accessible.
Recently, Smart introduced Giga Study, a data pack that enables subscribers to access a host of learning and productivity apps. “We are keen on enriching our data services with solutions that can empower Filipinos. Beyond our brand’s lifestyle offerings, we aim to continuously provide innovative solutions in education, as well as livelihood, health, and transportation, among others,” says Jane J. Basas, SVP and Head of Consumer Wireless Business at Smart.
Smart has also partnered with Edukasyon.PH, an education technology start-up that provides a series of programs and software apps to enable Filipino students reach their academic goals.
Students can join in on the fun as the Smart University virtual campus goes live on September 26 at www.smartuniversity2020.com until October 10, 2020.
