Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) and TNT, with provincial distributor F & H Marketing, have provided livelihood support to tricycle drivers in Siargao Island, to help them overcome the continued economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Smart engaged several Tricycle Operators and Drivers Associations for the Smart retailer kits to jumpstart their load retail business. Smart also handed out sun protective clothing to shield drivers from the heat of the sun while plying the road.
“We are happy that there is a big company that is thinking about our welfare. We are beyond grateful for Smart's generosity and support,” shared Jover Espejon, Vice President of General Luna Municipal Operators and Drivers Association.
“Tricycles are the main mode of transportation in Siargao Island and a reliable source of income for Siargaonons. With the pandemic’s effect on the island’s tourism aggravated by Super Typhoon Odette, drivers were earning less and struggled to support their families,” said Jay Uchida, Smart’s Customer Development Junior Manager.
“We partnered with them for the Smart retailer program to provide more livelihood opportunities for them aside from their usual occupation. We will continue to educate our newest partners on Smart and TNT’s best offers, to improve their retail business,” he added.
Smart and its parent company PLDT are committed to help the Philippines attain the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals, particularly livelihood targets under SDG #8: Good Jobs and Economic Growth and SDG #11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
