The Philippines’ largest integrated telco PLDT and its wireless unit Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) congratulate Filipina weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz as she qualifies for a spot in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.

This, after Diaz finished fourth in the Asian Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Diaz is a beneficiary of the MVP Sports Foundation (MVPSF), chaired by Manuel V. Pangilinan, who is also head of PLDT. The MVP Sports Foundation is an organization that supports Filipino athletes as they train to bring honor to the Philippines in their respective sports.

“We have always believed in the importance of sports in nation-building, and Hidilyn has given us another reason to be proud as Filipinos. We are continuously supporting her in her journey to the Olympics, as she joins the roster of Filipino athletes who will be representing the country in this much-awaited sporting event,” said Alfredo S. Panlilio, Smart Communications President and CEO and PLDT Chief Revenue Officer. Panlilio is First Vice President of the Philippine Olympic Committee, and also sits as the President and Trustee of the MVPSF.

Diaz has successfully completed six qualifying tournaments to ensure her slot in the Tokyo Olympics. Recall that the Zamboangueña bagged the Olympic silver medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics, gold medal in the 2018 Asian Games, and another gold medal in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games. She also bagged three gold medals in the 2020 Weightlifting World Cup in Rome last year.
