PLDT-Smart partners with the City of San Fernando in its journey to become smart, sustainable city
The city hall of San Fernando, Pampanga will soon have fast, free fiber-powered public Wifi service, thanks to an agreement with PLDT wireless subsidiary Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart).
Smart and the city government of San Fernando have signed an agreement to roll-out carrier-grade Wi-Fi through Google Station.
PLDT-Smart executives led by PLDT chairman and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan and City of San Fernando Mayor Edwin Santiago attended the signing ceremonies held recently at the City of San Fernando Heroes’ Hall.
“This is just the beginning of our partnership with the City of San Fernando. We look forward to being the city’s partner in its journey toward being a smart city,” said Pangilinan, who was also declared ‘adopted son of San Fernando’ during the event.
“By deploying Google Station to more areas nationwide, we are making carrier-grade Wi-Fi connectivity within reach of more Filipinos, wherever they may be,” said PLDT Chief Revenue Officer and Smart President and CEO Alfredo S. Panlilio. “With Google Station in their City Hall and public market, Fernandinos can connect to relevant online services while doing business with the mayor’s office.”
“We in the City of San Fernando envision a sustainable, livable, and smart city, and we always find innovative ways and strategies. Through this partnership with PLDT and Smart, the capital city can thoroughly achieve its vision to become a model city of countryside development by 2025,” Mayor Santiago said.
Once up, the San Fernando City Hall will join the growing list of 600 Google Station sites nationwide that Smart and Google Philippines initially announced in July 2019.
To date, the Smart-powered Wi-Fi service is already available in other government offices like city and provincial halls, as well as in offices of the National Bureau of Investigation and Land Transportation Office across the country.
Google Station is also available in other heavy foot-traffic areas such as airports and other transportation hubs like bus stations and seaports, tertiary schools, and malls, among others.
The nationwide rollout of Google Station complements Smart’s ongoing network expansion and modernization program across the Philippines.
For 2019, PLDT capex is expected to reach P78.4 billion, including allocations for the expansion of PLDT’s fiber broadband service, which also supports Smart’s mobile network by providing high-capacity links for cellular base stations.
