SMART cited for UNDP global campaign participation

[Nov. 17, 2008/ Makati City] -  Smart Communications Inc. (SMART) was recently recognized by the United Nations Millennium Campaign for participating in the Stand Up Take Action Against Poverty 2008 global campaign held last Oct. 17-19.   Some 100 SMART employees joined hundreds of racers in the Stand Up Take Action 2008: Paa-Bilisan Road Race. Also, 63 employee-volunteers participated in a tree planting activity at the Ipo Dam Watershed in Norzagaray, Bulacan. About 5,000 seedlings were planted together with the local community. Both activities were included by the UN Millennium Development Goals in the Stand Up Take Action Against Poverty global campaign.

The SMART employees who participated in the two activities are among the 116 million people from 110 countries all over the world who participated in the three-day.  Given the huge turnout, the campaign set a new Guinness World Record for the largest mobilization.  In the Philippines alone, about 35 million Filipinos joined events organized across the country.   Stand Up Take Action Against Poverty is part of a global effort to get people to address the issue of poverty and remind global leaders to achieve the Millennium Development Goals by 2015. @
