SMART supports infotech education in Mindanao

[March 26, 2009] Smart Communications, Inc. (SMART) through the Smart Schools Program (SSP) has donated computer equipment and free Internet access to public schools in Southern Mindanao.

In February, a joint turn-over ceremony for Upper Tambler Elementary School and Mindanao State University-High School in General Santos City commenced SMART’s collaboration with the schools and the community. Kiamba National High School and Kiamba Central Elementary School in Sarangani Province were also officially included in the roster of SSP beneficiaries.

Earlier this month, Cabantian Central Elementary School, Magallanes Elementary School, Kapitan Tomas Central Elementary School, San Roque Central Elemetary School, and Buhangin Central Elementary School became part of the growing number of partner schools nationwide. All five schools are under the Davao City Schools Division.

The Smart Schools Program (www.smartschools.ph) promotes the integration of Information and Communications Technology in public school education. Apart from equipment and high-speed Internet connectivity, the other program components are the provision of web hosting solutions and trainings for the stakeholders. Since its launch in December 2004, with Jolo National High School in Sulu as the pilot school for Mindanao, some 240 public schools have already benefitted from this community service initiative nationwide.

“The inclusion of ICT in the school curriculum allows the students to experience the benefits of the Internet,” said Ramon R. Isberto, SMART Public Affairs Group Head.  “The Smart Schools Program not only provides young Filipinos Internet access but also an adequate head start in technology utilization,” he added.

The Smart School Program is implemented through the Philippine Business for Social Progress, with the support of the Department of Education, the Smart Wireless Engineering Education Program (SWEEP) and the schools’ Parents, Teachers and Community Associations.
